Visiting a Korean pharmacy: FAQ
Do the staff at OWM speak English, Chinese or Japanese?
Yes. OWM pharmacies can assist visitors in English, Chinese and Japanese.
Can I get a tax refund at OWM?
Yes. OWM offers tax refunds for eligible international visitors. Bring your passport when you shop.
Can foreigners buy over-the-counter medicine at a Korean pharmacy without a prescription?
Yes. Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines in Korea can be bought without a prescription after a short consultation with the pharmacist, regardless of nationality. Prescription-only medicines require a prescription issued by a doctor in Korea.
What is the difference between a medicine, a quasi-drug and a health functional food in Korea?
Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety sorts pharmacy products into three groups. Medicines (의약품) have approved indications and fixed dosage. Quasi-drugs (의약외품) are mild-action products such as some acne patches, toothpastes and sanitary items. Health functional foods (건강기능식품) are supplements with approved functional ingredients; they are foods, not treatments for disease.
Can I bring Korean pharmacy products back home?
Cosmetics and supplements for personal use are generally fine in normal quantities, but rules differ by country — especially for medicines and anything containing restricted ingredients. Check your home country's customs rules before buying in bulk, and keep products in original packaging.
Is OWM a pharmacy or a store?
Both. Optima Wellness Museum is a Korean pharmacy where pharmacists curate skincare, supplements and over-the-counter products, so you can get pharmacist advice and shop in one visit.
