OWM GUIDE · Masks & Night Care
How sheet masks are actually used in the country that made them
Koreans don't wear a sheet mask every single night — that's the myth. It comes down to two things: picking the right type for the day, and taking it off on time.
Pharmacist's key points
The same questions and answers you'd get choosing a mask at a Korean pharmacy counter.
The question isn't "daily?" — it's "why tonight?"
Each format does a different job. A sheet floods the skin with moisture in a short window. A gel is what you reach for when skin feels hot. A wash-off cream mask resets things after cleansing. A sleeping pack seals everything in overnight. Decide what your skin is doing today, then pick the format — you'll end up buying far fewer masks.
If you want something nightly, rotate formats through the week rather than sheeting every single day.
Leaving it on longer doesn't help — it works against you
Once a sheet starts drying out, it begins pulling moisture back off your face. Past the time on the package (usually 10–20 minutes) there's nothing left to gain. The cue is simple: take it off before the edges go dry.
Don't fall asleep in a sheet mask. That's the version people wake up feeling tight from.
Whatever you put on has to be sealed in
Right after you peel a mask off, the surface is holding water — and if you stop there, most of it just evaporates. Pat in the leftover essence, then lock it down with a cream or a sleeping pack. Whether a mask feels worth it usually comes down to this last step.
If you dislike the tacky feel, use a thinner layer of cream but carry it down the neck.
On a reactive day, a gel is easier than a sheet
After a laser or peel, or a long day in the sun, there's still heat sitting in the skin. A gel you can spread thin — and either rinse off or leave on — sits more comfortably than a sheet pressed flat against your face. Choose one without fragrance or alcohol, and keeping it in the fridge makes it more pleasant.
When you can resume home care after a procedure varies by procedure. Follow the schedule your clinic gave you first.
Never open a new mask the night before something important
A product you've never used is a product whose reaction you can't predict. There's no reason to run that experiment the night before a presentation, a shoot, or a wedding. Try new things on a night with nothing on the calendar, patch a small area first — inner arm or jawline — then go full face.
The night before is for repeating something you've already used many times, not for trying something new.
Hotel rooms and planes are drier than you think
Long-haul cabins and hotel rooms run at low humidity, so your usual routine can still leave you tight by morning. In your bag, one sleeping pack or cream mask earns its space more than a couple of sheets. In-flight, a thin re-layer of cream is more practical than trying to wear a mask.
Drink water alongside it. There's only so much you can fix from the outside.

How to use it
Not all of it every day — this is what to reach for when the situation shows up.
- Every night
- Cleanse → toner → one layer of cream. This is the baseline on non-mask nights, and masks only matter if this part holds.
- 2–3× a week
- Sheet mask, 10–20 minutes, off before it dries. Pat the leftover essence down to the neck, then seal with cream.
- Reactive days
- Skip the sheet — a thin layer of gel instead. Fragrance- and alcohol-free, laid on rather than rubbed in.
- Once a week
- Finish with a sleeping pack. Not a thick coat — a light layer over the dry areas is plenty before bed.
- Traveling
- For planes and hotels, one cream mask or sleeping pack is enough. Don't debut a new product on the road.
