OWM GUIDE · Wrinkles, Firmness & Eyes

Firmness is decided by consistency, not strength

Using something tolerable for a long time beats using something strong for two weeks. Here's how Korean pharmacists talk people through retinol, eye care and expression lines.

Pharmacist's key points

The order Korean pharmacists actually work through when someone asks about wrinkles.

Mild and long beats strong and short

People shop this category by percentage. What actually adds up, though, is the number of nights you didn't skip. A low strength you can wear every day usually gets you further than a high one that irritated you and ended up in a drawer after two weeks.

Think in 2–3 month stretches. Two weeks is too early to judge anything here.

Retinol has a break-in period

Going nightly from day one is how most people end up stinging, flaking and red. Start low, twice a week, and if nothing complains, move to three, then every other night. Applying moisturizer first and layering retinol on top — buffering — makes those early weeks much easier.

Use retinoids at night only, and always pair them with daytime sunscreen. If irritation is strong or lingers, stop and see a dermatologist.

If retinol doesn't suit you, there's another road

If your skin runs reactive, if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you've already bailed on retinol twice, there's no rule saying you have to push through. Bakuchiol and peptide formulas sit lower on the irritation scale and are easier to wear daily. In this category, whether you'll actually use it matters more than the ingredient list.

If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or under dermatological treatment, ask a professional before choosing actives.

Around the eyes, dryness comes before wrinkles

A lot of fine lines around the eyes simply read deeper when the skin is dry. So the first move isn't a stronger active — it's keeping water and oil there so the area doesn't go tight by afternoon. Tap it on with your ring finger instead of rubbing it in.

Stop at the orbital bone you can feel with your fingertip, so nothing migrates into the eye.

Expression lines and lost volume are different problems

A crease that forms where your face folds when you smile isn't the same thing as a face that looks generally deflated. Topicals do their best work on texture, dryness and fine lines; deep folds and volume changes are realistically a clinic conversation. Collagen supplements and inner beauty products also play a different role from what you apply, so it's better not to treat one as a swap for the other.

Health functional foods are not intended to prevent or treat disease — stick to the stated serving.

Sunscreen is the strongest anti-aging step there is

This is how nearly every Korean pharmacy consultation ends. Whatever you apply at night, unprotected daytime exposure builds up faster than it. And once you start retinol your skin can become more sun-sensitive, which makes sunscreen part of the same set, not an optional extra.

Cloudy days and desks near windows count too. One solid application each morning is the habit worth keeping.

How to use it

If you're starting from scratch, this much is enough.

Morning
Cleanse → moisturize → sunscreen. These three stay in no matter what else changes.
Night
After cleansing, a peptide or bakuchiol formula, daily. Low enough on irritation to actually keep up.
2×/week
Low-strength retinol, twice a week to start. Moisturizer first, retinol on top, for an easier break-in.
Eyes daily
Eye cream goes on with taps, not rubbing. Handle the dryness before you chase the lines.
Ongoing
Supplements work best at the same time each day. Give it 2–3 months before you judge.
