OWM GUIDE · Pores, Texture & Exfoliation
You don't shrink pores. You keep them from stretching
When someone asks about pores in a Korean pharmacy, the first move isn't a product — it's figuring out which type of pore you're dealing with. Pores, exfoliation and texture, all on one page.
Pharmacist's key points
The same order Korean pharmacists walk through when pores come up at the counter.
Pores aren't shrunk — they're protected
How many pores you have, and how big they are, is largely something you're born with. So the Korean framing isn't about shrinking them; it's about keeping them from looking wider than they already do. The same pore reads bigger the moment oil, firmness or dead skin gets out of balance.
No single step turns this around overnight. Give any change 2–4 weeks before you judge the texture.
Wide-looking pores come in three types
Shiny and round-looking around the nose is the oil type. Stretched into little teardrops on the cheeks is the laxity type. Rough to the touch with clogged-looking openings is the buildup type. The steps you add are completely different for each: cleansing and oil control, hydration and firming, or scheduled exfoliation.
Mixed types are common. When they overlap, fixing the one that bothers you most — just one — is the least risky place to start.
AHA, BHA and PHA each have their own job
AHA is water-soluble and works on surface buildup. BHA is oil-soluble, so it can get down into the pore itself. PHA has a larger molecule and works more slowly, which makes it the easiest one for sensitive skin to try first.
Stacking all three in one night mostly buys you irritation. Pick one, get used to it, and switch later if you want.
Exfoliants run on a schedule, not on daily repeat
Exfoliation isn't a step where more equals better. The usual Korean approach is starting at once or twice a week and only increasing if skin stays calm. Strip too much and skin often pushes back with more oil to replace what you took, which is the opposite of what you wanted.
Stinging, redness or tightness is a signal to pause, not to push. Take a few days off and keep only moisturizer.
Cleansing longer doesn't clean pores deeper
Oil inside a pore doesn't come out in proportion to how long you scrub. What scrubbing longer actually wears down is your barrier. Lukewarm water, under a minute, rolling foam gently over the skin rather than rubbing — that gets you further.
Don't stack hot water, scrubs and pore strips on the same day. If redness lingers, that night is cleanse-and-moisturize only.
Body calluses need a different product entirely
The skin on elbows, knees and heels is far thicker than facial skin, so face exfoliants barely register there. Korean pharmacies point you to a separate body product with urea for those spots. It works the other way too — those heavy body textures clog facial pores easily.
On heels, apply while skin is still damp after a shower and put socks on. If the skin is cracked or bleeding, see a doctor before self-treating.

How to use it
If you're starting from scratch, this order alone is enough.
- Morning
- Lukewarm cleanse, then moisturizer and sunscreen. UV is the biggest reason laxity-type pores start looking stretched.
- Nightly
- Keep cleansing under a minute. Build real foam, roll it over the skin instead of rubbing, and rinse with lukewarm water.
- 2×/week
- After cleansing, sweep an AHA/BHA toner once — focus on the nose and chin. You don't need to drag it over your whole face.
- Exfoliation nights
- On any night you exfoliate, layer ampoule and cream generously. Putting back what you took is what makes the next round easy.
- 2–3×/week
- Urea cream on heels and elbows, kept separate from facial products. Right after a shower, while skin is still damp, works best.
