OWM GUIDE · Body & Scalp Care

In Korea, your back and scalp get the same attention as your face

Back breakouts, thickened skin on elbows and heels, an oily or smelly scalp, dry legs — the parts that usually get skipped, sorted out on one page.

Pharmacist's key points

The body and scalp questions Korean pharmacists field most often.

For back breakouts, shower order beats stronger soap

When your back keeps breaking out, the instinct is to buy a harsher body wash. Korean pharmacists usually look at the order first. Everything you rinse out of your hair runs down your back, so finishing shampoo and conditioner before you wash your body tends to be far more comfortable. Try holding that order for two or three weeks before you change products.

Conditioner residue that never fully rinsed out settles on the back too. Body last, rinsed thoroughly, is the basic rule.

Urea is made for the thick skin on your body

Elbows, knees and heels build up a much tougher layer than the face ever does, and urea is a common choice for exactly those spots. It pulls in water while softening hardened skin, which is why it suits areas that have gone rough. Applying it at night and covering with socks or a thin cloth makes the next morning noticeably better.

Don't take that same product to your face. Body formulas are concentrated for body skin and can be irritating on the face.

Your scalp is skin, just with hair on it

When the smell or oiliness bothers you, washing more often and more vigorously feels like the answer — and it often makes oil come back faster. Treat the scalp the way you treat your face: calm it, and keep water and oil in balance. Lukewarm water, fingertips instead of nails, and a complete rinse matter more than which bottle you buy.

Scratching with nails creates small wounds and leaves the scalp more reactive. Use the pads of your fingers only.

With a scalp tonic, timing is half the product

Cooling and soothing tonics are designed for a dry scalp. On a wet one, the product dilutes and runs off before much of it stays where you wanted it. Towel off, rough-dry with a hairdryer, then part your hair in sections so the spray actually reaches the scalp rather than the hair.

If your scalp is broken or weeping, pause anything with alcohol or menthol for a while.

Body lotion goes on damp skin, within three minutes

Right after a shower, while your skin is still damp, is when moisturizer has the most to work with. Wait until you're fully dry and there's simply less water to hold onto. Pat off the excess rather than rubbing yourself dry, and start with the areas that go dry fastest, usually the shins.

Long, hot showers leave legs tighter by evening. Shorter and lukewarm is easier on the skin.

When you travel, your body reacts before your face does

Different water and hours under air conditioning tend to show up on your shins and forearms first — itchy, a little flaky — while your face still seems fine. An unfamiliar environment is not the moment to test a new product; bringing the moisturizer you already trust is the safer call. Hotel body wash often doesn't agree with people either, so decanting your own into a small bottle is common practice.

If itching spreads widely or hasn't settled after a few days, stop scratching and see a doctor.

How to use it

If you're starting from scratch, this order alone is enough.

Shower order
Hair first, body last. Rinse out shampoo and conditioner completely before washing your back — that's what keeps residue off it.
Within 3 min
Pat off the excess and put body lotion on damp skin, legs first. Before you're fully dry is the sweet spot.
After drying
Scalp tonic goes on a dry scalp. Part your hair in sections so it lands on skin, then spread it gently with your fingertips.
2–3x a week
Urea cream on elbows and heels at night. Cover with socks or a thin cloth and the morning looks different.
Travel
Skip new products — decant the moisturizer you already use. New water and air conditioning hit your body first.
