OWM GUIDE · Swelling & Leg Circulation
Why Korean pharmacies have a whole shelf for heavy legs
In Korea, leg swelling is its own pharmacy category — for people who stand all day, sit all day, and for travel days that end at 20,000 steps.
Pharmacist's key points
The things a Korean pharmacist checks first when someone says they feel puffy.
Morning face puffiness and evening leg heaviness aren't the same thing
A puffy face after waking up comes from lying flat all night, so fluid settles upward. It usually eases once you start moving. Legs go the other way — they get heavier as the day goes on, because you've spent hours upright or seated. Two different patterns, so two different responses.
If facial puffiness is still there by evening, or if only one leg swells, that's outside the range of a lifestyle habit.
The thing to cut back is sodium, not water
A lot of people stop drinking water when they feel swollen, which usually backfires. After salty food, the body holds onto fluid to balance things out, and drinking less just keeps it there longer. The more useful question is what you ate yesterday — ramen, broth, anything salty.
Korean food adds up fast on sodium because of soups and kimchi. Just not finishing the broth makes a noticeable difference.
Standing isn't the problem — staying still is
Your calf muscles are what push blood back upward. Standing or sitting, the longer you hold one position, the heavier your legs get. Getting up once an hour and flexing your ankles up and down is genuinely enough to change how the end of the day feels.
On a long flight or bus ride where you can't move around, just lift and lower your toes in your seat, repeatedly.
The format decides when it's easy to actually take
Tablets are the easy pick for a daily habit at a fixed time. Liquid sticks go down without water, which is handy when you're out or in transit. Chewables and jellies are the ones people reach for on trips, when finding water is a hassle. Same ingredient, and the format you won't skip wins.
Follow the stated dosage for any over-the-counter medicine, and tell the pharmacist about anything else you're taking.
Compression and posture come before any product
Elevating your feet slightly above heart level for 15–20 minutes makes the evening noticeably lighter. On a full day of standing, put compression stockings on in the morning — pulling them on after your legs have already swollen just feels tight. Warming the calves in the shower and finishing with cool water is another common Korean habit.
Compression only works at the right fit. Deep marks or numbness mean the size is wrong.
When your gut feels off, swelling feels bigger than it is
On days when your waistband digs in, it's easy to read the whole body as swollen. Often part of it is gas or a delayed bathroom rhythm rather than fluid. Travel makes this overlap common, because meals and timing change all at once. That's why gut comfort gets checked alongside circulation.
Health functional foods aren't intended to prevent or treat disease, and they're generally judged over 2–4 weeks.

How to use it
Built around a travel day with a lot of walking.
- Morning
- If it's a walking day, compression stockings before you head out — far more comfortable than putting them on later.
- Daytime
- Move your ankles at least once an hour. On the go, liquid or chewable formats are the easy ones to take without water.
- Dinner
- Don't finish the broth. If the meal was salty, keep drinking water as usual — don't cut it.
- Bedtime
- Legs up for 15–20 minutes. Massaging cream upward from ankle to knee is a nice way to close the day.
- Daily
- If heaviness is a regular thing, keep one tablet at a fixed time and give it 2–4 weeks before judging.

Follow the stated dosage for any medicine; health functional foods are not intended to prevent or treat disease.
