OWM GUIDE · Sun Protection & Tone
Korean sunscreen is praised for how it wears, not its number
Raising the SPF is the easy part; making a sunscreen you'll actually wear daily is the hard part. Application amount, reapplying, and pigmentation care — all on one page.
Pharmacist's key points
The order Korean pharmacists actually run through when helping someone pick a sunscreen.
Read the SPF number together with how much you apply
SPF and PA are measured at a set application amount. For a face that's roughly 0.8–1g — about two finger-lengths — and most people use less than half of it. So applying enough of a texture you enjoy usually beats a thin layer of SPF50.
If that much at once feels heavy, split it into two thin layers a few minutes apart.
Mineral vs chemical is mostly a difference in feel
Mineral filters can leave a white cast but tend to be gentler, so they're the usual suggestion for reactive skin and kids. Chemical filters sit light and blend well, but they can sting the eyes once they mix with sweat. Most Korean formulas blend both, and that hybrid is what people actually reach for every morning.
If your eyes sting often, switching just the eye area to a mineral stick is an easy fix.
Reapplying means layering on top, not starting over
Filters wear down with sweat, oil and friction, so outdoors it's worth topping up every 2–3 hours. Since you can't remove your makeup to redo it, a sun cushion or sun stick is the realistic tool here. Pressing it on lightly is enough.
A full day indoors doesn't need a top-up every 2–3 hours. The trigger is exposure, not the clock.
Wear it on cloudy days and by the window too
UVA, the part that slowly shifts your tone, passes through clouds and glass to a meaningful degree. That's the reason to wear it on a desk day by the window or a long drive. Plenty of people in Korea keep a lighter indoor formula that layers easily over makeup.
On high-UV days, pairing sunscreen with a hat and sunglasses is the more reliable combination.
Keeping pigmentation from darkening is faster than fading it
Existing pigmentation takes a long time, but how fast it deepens is something sun habits can slow down. That's why the order is protection first, tone care second. If you're using vitamin C or a soothing line, give it around 2–3 months before you judge it.
For pigmentation or scarring that's already settled in, see a dermatologist rather than stretching self-care indefinitely.
A Korean summer is about humidity as much as heat
July and August in Korea are humid enough that sweat breaks the film into patches. If you're travelling, use a water-resistant type, and blot sweat with a tissue instead of wiping before you top up. After swimming, reapply regardless of the clock.
If your skin is already flushed from strong sun, skip starting any new active product that day and stick to soothing and moisture.

How to use it
If you're starting from scratch, this order alone is enough.
- Morning
- Cleanse, moisturize, then sunscreen as the final step — it needs to sit on top to hold an even film.
- Before out
- Apply about 15 minutes before leaving, and carry it onto the easy-to-forget spots: neck, behind the ears, backs of hands.
- Midday
- Outdoors, top up with a sun cushion or stick every 2–3 hours. No need to take your makeup off.
- Night
- After a high-sun day, keep it to soothing and moisture. Give exfoliants and retinol the night off.
- Long run
- Tone care is a 2–3 month commitment. Add one product at a time instead of starting several at once.
